Finding a Martial Arts School

Quite often I am asked about finding a Christian martial arts school. I want to address several questions that I am usually asked, and raise a few of my own. I believe this will help you in finding the school, and situation that is right for you.

1.) Do you know of a Christian martial arts school in my city or town?

Let me ask you this question. What is the reason you want to study martial arts? Asking if one knows of a school is like saying your looking for a car. Just any car? What type, color, model, etc., do you want? It is no different with martial arts. With so many varying styles and systems, you need to narrow your search down to, "What do I want to learn, or what benefit do I want to obtain from this?".

I have been asked on numerous occasions if I give lessons. When I ask the question," what is it you want to learn?", I usually get a blank look from the person asking. When you can answer this basic question you will find the search for a school narrowed down.

2.) Is it necessary that my school/instructor be Christian?

No. While I believe this is a benefit, it is not necessary. You might not be able to find a believing school or instructor in your town. I am blessed that in 12 years of study, my instructors have predominately been Christians.

I strongly urge you to avoid any school that makes it mandatory, or puts pressure on you to participate in eastern mysticism or acts which violate the Bible. Remember this, YOU are called to be salt and light wherever YOU are. Openly be a witness for Christ.

3.) What types of problem issues should I be looking for? What about Chi?

Please follow this link to an excellent article written by my instructor, Bob Orlando, which will help put this issue in prospective, Biblically.

Conclusion:

Go to the school you are considering. Watch a class, if possible, see if you can participate in a introductory class ( my school allows this.) Observe how the instructor interacts with the students. Above all, ask the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you.

If you have further questions, or if I can help you in any way, e-mail me at Dannycma@msn.com, and I will answer you as quickly as possible.
